Keira Knightley, fresh from the prestige sale of period drama Colette in Sundance, will turn tables and star as British intelligence whistle-blower Katharine Gun, companioned alongside Matt Smith in Official Secrets, Mark Gordon and eOne announced today. Keira will next be seen in November in Disney’s fantasy adventure The Nutcracker And The Four Realms. Smith famously portrayed Doctor Who, in the long-running UK sci-fi series, most recently starred in Netflix series The Crown, and just announced to portray Charles Manson in a new documentary movie Charlie Says. His new movie, which he is acting with Keira Knightley in, has been in the works for year with different cast members coming and going- however, a reconstituted version is finally coming together for the EFM ahead of a scheduled March 12 start date, in Yorkshire, England. EOne will oversee the production, and finances with Screen Yorkshire and producer Melissa Shiyu Zuo, while Gavin Hood will be director (his credits include his Oscar-winning Tsotsi, Ender’s Game and X-Men Origins: Wolverine) of the true story of Gun, a former Mandarin translator at the notorious British intelligence agency, named GCHQ, in Cheltenham who made headlines after she leaked a confidential NSA information that proposed the US and UK put pressure on six of the ‘swing’ nations on the UN Security Council to vote in favour of the imminent 2003 Iraq invasion. UK newspaper The Observer broke the story and Gun was arrested and charged under the Official Secrets Act, sparking a public outcry, while authorities dropped the case as soon as her trial began in early 2004. Official Secrets shows an incredibly
intense and suspenseful true story, pulling the curtain back on the one of the most controversial international incidents in recent history- combining Keira and Matt’s exceptional talent with Gavin’s unrivaled storytelling abilities, we are, without doubt, confident this film will leave a true, deep impression with audiences around the world.
