US Health Secretary Tom Price, the center of a major scandal following his travels and public money pages, resigned on Friday, the White House said.
Price "presented its resignation (...) and the president accepted it," the White House said in a brief statement. The president, Donald Trump, had said in the morning to make a decision on the future of Price during this day.
Price was literally at the center of a spectacular controversy a week ago after it was discovered that it performed for less than 26 flights on planes costing more than $ 400,000.
Doctor and famous for his diatribes in public spending, price had always rented a plane for a return flight between Washington and Philadelphia (a trip of just over half an hour) for $ 25,000, even though there were daily flights between those cities
On Thursday afternoon, the price issued a note stating that it would refund the costs of its "seat on those flights," although there are still investigations to determine if the members of his family also benefited from those flights.
Beyond the spectacular scandal with the use of airplanes, the price position in the cabinet was obviously weakened by its inability to serve as an interlocutor with Congress to make a new law on health insurance.
From his bench in Congress, price had vigorously faced the approval of the current system, known as Obamacare, but failed to articulate a sufficient number of votes for the legislature to support an alternative solution.
"It's better that Tom (Price) gets the votes, or I'll say, 'Tom, you're fired,'" Trump said in July. Since then, his position has been weakening in every failure to make an alternative to Obamacare.
The director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Scott Pruitt, is also under pressure to explain the continued use of airplanes.
